Dokkaebi

I drew this dokkaebi based on the protective meaning of gwimyeonwa.

Gwimyeonwa are traditional roof tiles decorated with fierce faces, placed at the ends of roofs to keep evil spirits and misfortune from entering the home. In this piece, I reinterpreted this meaning as a dokkaebi guardian dwelling beneath dancheong-painted eaves and protecting the home and those inside.

The frontal face anchors the center, while the dancheong patterns and clouds spread outward on both sides. The red eyes draw focus against the grey face and muted colors.

This tattoo design is intended to spread broadly across the full chest or back.

귀면와의 벽사적 의미를 바탕으로 도깨비를 그렸습니다.

귀면와는 지붕 끝에 놓여 집 안으로 들어오는 잡귀와 재앙을 막는 의미를 지닌 장식 기와입니다. 이 작품에서는 그 의미를 도깨비의 형상으로 풀어, 단청 처마에 깃들어 집과 그 안의 사람을 지키는 수호자로 표현했습니다.

정면을 바라보는 도깨비 얼굴을 중심에 두고, 단청 문양과 구름이 양옆으로 넓게 펼쳐지도록 구성했습니다. 회색 얼굴과 낮은 채도의 단청색 사이에 붉은 눈을 두어 시선이 얼굴에 먼저 머물도록 했습니다.

가슴 한판이나 등판에서 좌우로 넓게 자리 잡는 구성을 염두에 둔 타투 도안입니다.
