Bukcheong Saja Noreum

This piece is based on Bukcheong Saja Noreum, a traditional Korean lion mask dance.

Through the lion mask, the dance carries the meaning of driving away harmful spirits and bad fortune, while wishing for peace and good fortune for the village.

I kept the strong form of the lion mask clear, and used the flowing mane like fast brushstrokes to carry the movement and force of the dance.

I wanted the lion's motion — shaking, turning, and driving away misfortune — to remain alive on the skin.

한국 전통 탈춤인 북청사자놀음을 바탕으로 작업한 그림입니다.

북청사자놀음은 사자탈을 통해 잡귀와 액운을 물리치고 마을의 평안과 복을 비는 의미를 가진 전통 놀이입니다.

사자탈의 멋진 형태는 분명하게 두고, 갈기의 흐름을 빠른 붓질처럼 풀어 탈춤이 움직일 때의 동세와 기세를 담고자 했습니다.

몸을 흔들고 휘돌며 액운을 몰아내는 사자의 움직임이 피부 위에서도 살아 있기를 바랐습니다.
