Hojakdo

Hojakdo, one of the most iconic themes in Korean folk painting, depicts a tiger together with a magpie.

In minhwa, the tiger is portrayed not only as a powerful animal, but also with a humorous and approachable expression. The magpie represents joyful news and good fortune, while the pine tree symbolizes endurance and lasting vitality.

For this piece, I focused on the tiger's rounded, playful expression and movement, composing the magpie and pine tree above it as part of a single connected scene.

I wanted the wit and auspicious meaning of traditional Hojakdo to remain naturally present on the skin.

호작도는 호랑이와 까치를 함께 그린 민화의 대표적인 소재입니다.

민화 속 호랑이는 위엄 있는 맹수이면서도, 때로는 익살스럽고 친근한 표정으로 표현됩니다. 까치는 반가운 소식과 좋은 기운을 전하는 새로 여겨졌고, 소나무는 오래도록 변하지 않는 생명력과 굳건함을 상징합니다.

이번 작업에서는 호랑이의 둥글고 해학적인 표정과 몸의 움직임을 중심으로, 그 위에 앉은 까치와 소나무가 하나의 장면으로 이어지도록 구성했습니다.

전통 호작도가 가진 유쾌함과 길한 의미가 피부 위에서도 자연스럽게 남기를 바랐습니다.
